Check what the machine supports before anything else

Capacity: how much is enough
For a general office machine that will stay in service three or more years, 16 GB is the practical floor. Memory speed is quoted as a data rate (for example DDR4-3200 or DDR5-5600). The system runs all modules at the slowest speed present, and at no more than the motherboard and processor support, so buying faster memory than the machine can use gives no benefit. Buy the speed the manufacturer specifies; buying slightly faster is harmless and sometimes easier to find. For business use, capacity matters far more than speed.
Before installing, back up the machine, power it off, unplug it and touch a grounded metal surface. Notebook memory sits under a bottom panel or a small door; desktop slots are next to the processor. Modules click into place at an angle on notebooks and straight down on desktops. If the machine does not start after the upgrade, reseat the module before assuming it is faulty.
